Christian Wirth obtained a PhD in International Studies from Waseda University in September 2011. Since April 2008, he had been a Research Assistant with the Global Institute for Asian Regional Integration (GIARI) and PhD Candidate at the Graduate School of Asia-Pacific Studies (GSAPS). Before coming to Tokyo he was working for the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport of Switzerland. In 2006 and 2007 Chris studied Chinese at Tsinghua University in Beijing. He graduated with a Master of International Affairs from the Australian National University (ANU) in 2005 and had obtained a Master of Law from the University of St. Gallen (HSG) in 2001. His research interests center on the political and security challenges to contemporary Northeast Asian societies with a particular focus on environmental and maritime affairs among China, Japan and South Korea. Chris was recipient of a Swiss National Science Foundation scholarship for young researchers.
