Call for Paper Proposals: International Studies Association Annual Convention in Montreal, Canada, March 16-19, 2011

If you are interested in presenting a paper on a panel on "Promoting Peace and Prosperity through Regional Integration in East Asia: Power, Interests, and Ideas," please submit a proposal to Professor Tsuneo Akaha (Monterey Institute of International Studies, 460 Pierce, Monterey, CA 93940, U.S.A.) by e-mail at takaha@miis.edu by April 10th, 2010.

The proposed panel will discuss the role of power, interests, and ideas in the development of regional integration in East Asia. Proposed papers will define regional integration either as an independent variable or as a dependent variable and explore whether and how regional integration promotes peace and prosperity or whether and how developments within the region are promoting or obstructing the process of regional integration. Regional integration may be captured at the subregional level (i.e., within Northeast Asia or Southeast Asia) or at the broader East Asian regional level. Proposals for papers on bilateral relations or comparative case studies may be acceptable if they directly discuss the implications of bilateral relations or comparative cases for regional integration. Issues addressed may be political, economic, security, or social-cultural.

A complete proposal will include the following items:

  1. Name, school/program, graduate status (e.g., PhD student), year of enrollment in the program;
  2. Contact information, including mailing address, phone/fax number, e-mail address;
  3. Title of the paper;
  4. Abstract (1,000 words maximum, including a statement of the research question, theoretical and policy significance of the study, methodology, central argument; the abstract may read as a summary of an already completed study, a summary of a study-in-progress, or a proposal of a study yet to be conducted); and,
  5. A letter of endorsement by your supervisor/advisor.

Submitted proposals will be reviewed by a committee of GIARI faculty and selected papers will be included in a panel proposal to be submitted to the convention program co-chairs. Please note that selection for the panel proposal does not guarantee final acceptance by the program co-chairs.
