リサーチ目的

The objective of this research trip was to present the paper entitled "Globalization, education and development: A comparison between successes and failures in the Asia-Pacific" at 44th Annual Conference of Asian Studies on the Pacific Coast (ASPAC) at Portland State University. In addition, it was also aimed to earn necessary knowledge on international academic conferences and to gain skills on how to present academic paper in such conferences from experts from Monterey Institute of International Studies (MIIS).

研究課題

Link between globalization, development and education is one of the major subjects of interest in the contemporary discourse on international development. Increasing global interaction and interdependence has expanded opportunities for those countries in Asia with better levels of education but has made progress more difficult for countries with low levels of education. Thus, what are the relationships between globalization and development; and how important is investment in education for gaining more benefits from the increasing globalization for development of a country? Education, globalization, income and health indicators of successful and unsuccessful countries are compared to answer the above questions. The study finds that countries with high levels of education have achieved continuous high growth in per capita income along with rapid globalization over time. In contrast, countries with low levels of education have found it more difficult to achieve progress. They have experienced very slow growth in per capita income and have not been able to effectively integrate with the global economy and society. However, in spite of high performance on education and globalization, the Philippines has surprisingly low growth in per capita income over the period of 1970 to 2006, and poverty and income inequalities are also still high.

成果

  • Paper entitled "Globalization, education and development: A comparison between successes and failures in Asia Pacific" was presented at the Monterey Institute of International Studies (MIIS). The preparatory presentation was helpful to improve the overall presentation skills in international conferences as well as to increase the quality of the paper.
  • The same paper was presented at 44th Annual conference of Asian Studies on the Pacific Coast (ASPAC) at Portland State University as a part of the panel on 'Multidisciplinary Examination of Regional Cooperation in East Asia: Education, Trade and Environment' chaired by Professor Tsuneo Akaha of Monterey Institute of International Studies.
  • Besides the presentation on the designated panel, this research trip was helpful to broaden the network among scholars and peers who have same research interests.
